2020

Suncor Energy Inc.

Date of event: August 15, 2020

On August 15, 2020, Suncor Energy Inc. informed the CNSC that a fire occurred at its Fort McMurray location. The fire was extinguished upon being discovered. Nuclear gauges stored at the plant were in close proximity to the fire and their condition is being investigated. There were no injuries and the event poses no impact to the public or the environment.

CNSC staff are receiving regular status updates from the licensee. They will review the investigation report once it has been completed to determine if any further action is required.

Best Theratronics Ltd.

Date of the event: May 22, 2020

The licensee informed the CNSC that a fire occurred on May 22 at the Ottawa location of Best Theratronics Ltd. The fire was localized to the roof of the building and took place during repairs. The City of Ottawa Fire Department responded to the incident and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries and no impact to the public. A final report was submitted to the CNSC.

2019

Suncor Energy Inc.

Date of event: December 6, 2019

On December 6, 2019, Suncor Energy Inc., a CNSC licensee, informed the CNSC that a fire occurred at its Mackay River site. The fire remained active overnight, causing the building’s roof to collapse, and was extinguished on the evening of December 7, 2019.

Personal dosimeters were provided to emergency response personnel onsite who continued to maintain a safe distance around the building. The licensee-conducted radiation survey concluded that none of the measurements exceeded action or regulatory limits. Four fixed nuclear gauges at the site were damaged from the fire, and were later removed and disposed of safely.

Construction to rebuild is ongoing, but the site is back in operation. There were no injuries and the event poses no potential impact to the public or the environment.

SRB Technologies

Date of Notification: January 2, 2019

On January 2, 2019, SRB Technologies (SRBT) informed the CNSC that a fire occurred at a lumber yard approximately 500 meters from their facility in Pembroke, Ontario. The local fire department put out the fire. SRBT staff confirm that other than a temporary loss of electrical power, there was no impact on its operations, public safety or the environment.

2018

Isologic Innovative Radiopharmaceuticals

Date of notification: November 9, 2018

On November 9, 2018, Isologic Innovative Radiopharmaceuticals informed the CNSC that a nuclear energy worker received an equivalent dose to the skin of the hand that exceeded the regulatory dose limit of 500 mSv during a one-year dosimetry period. The licensee has removed the individual from duties that could add to the dose, and monitoring is ongoing. The CNSC is following up.

2016

SRB Technologies (Canada) Inc. (SRBT)

Date of event: November 28, 2016

Nuclear substance processing facility, Pembroke, Ontario

The CNSC was informed by SRBT that a trailer containing expired safety signs was stolen as it was being shipped from the US to its facility in Pembroke, Ontario. The police have been notified, and the investigation is currently ongoing. The signs were contained in packages that meet all applicable regulations. During normal conditions of transport and use, there is no anticipated risk to the public or the environment due to the transport of this material. Visit SRBT's website for more information.

Update: The truck was recovered on December 15, 2016, and all contents were accounted for. There were no signs of tampering with the items. Read SRBT's full report on the event.

SRB Technologies (Canada) Inc. (SRBT)

Date of event: June 1, 2016

Nuclear substance processing facility, Pembroke, Ontario

In accordance with the regulations and their licence conditions, SRBT informed the CNSC of the activation of a fire alarm at their facility. The alarm was activated as a result of smoke originating from a malfunctioning compressor. The Pembroke Fire Department responded to the alarm and verified that there was no fire.

2015

Nordion (Canada) Ltd.

Date of event: August 6, 2015

Nuclear substance processing facility, Kanata, Ontario

The CNSC was informed by Nordion (Canada) Inc., in accordance with the regulations and Nordion's licence conditions, of a fire in the operations building at its Kanata facility. The building was evacuated and Ottawa Fire Services quickly had the fire under control. This was a non-radiological event with no injuries and no impact to worker and public health and safety or the local environment. A CNSC inspector is on site and will continue to monitor the situation. Nordion processes nuclear substances (radioisotopes) for medical and industrial applications. This event will be discussed at a Commission hearing on August 19, 2015. As per the CNSC's requirements for public disclosure, Nordion has posted information regarding this event.
