Participant funding for the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Near Surface Disposal Facility Project

Participant funding for the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Near Surface Disposal Facility Project will be open from May 25, 2016 to September 2, 2016.

Participant funding notice

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is offering participant funding to assist members of the public, Aboriginal groups and other stakeholders in participating in the environmental assessment, licence application review and Commission hearing processes for the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) Near Surface Disposal Facility Project.

Under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, CNL is requesting an amendment to its existing nuclear research and test establishment licence for the Chalk River Laboratories site. Before the CNSC can make a licensing decision on this proposal, an environmental assessment (EA) conducted under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 is required.

For further details on CNL’s proposal and the EA process, please see the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry project 80122. The dates and location of associated CNSC public Commission hearings will be announced at a later date in a notice of public hearing.

Participant funding up to $100,000 is being offered for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information, through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. Funding will be awarded for the review of documentation including CNL’s environmental impact statement, CNSC staff and CNL Commission member documents, and for participation in associated public Commission hearings.

To apply for participant funding, interested parties must fill out and return the participant funding application form. Certain terms and conditions apply. Submit the application form by

  • email: cnsc.pfp.ccsn@canada.ca

The deadline to submit a participant funding application is September 2, 2016. Please note that late or incomplete funding applications will not be considered.

A funding review committee, independent of the CNSC, will consider all applications for funding and make recommendations on the allocation of funds.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
