Arrangements with Indigenous Nations and communities
July 2024 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with English River First Nation
English River First Nation (ERFN) and the CNSC have signed terms of reference for long-term engagement. The arrangement provides a structured approach for ongoing and respectful dialogue, engagement and collaboration regarding CNSC-regulated nuclear facilities and activities of interest to ERFN. This includes working collaboratively on the environmental assessment process for Denison’s proposed Wheeler River project and for other uranium mining operations in northern Saskatchewan. The arrangement also provides for an annual workplan that ERFN and CNSC staff will co-develop and implement on a yearly basis.
May 2024 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation
The arrangement provides a structured forum for ongoing and respectful open dialogue, engagement and collaboration regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities of interest within the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) traditional and treaty territories. For example, the CNSC and ACFN are collaborating to gather and understand traditional land use information and community perspectives near proposed, licensed and legacy uranium mine sites in northern Saskatchewan. This arrangement includes an annual workplan that ACFN and CNSC staff will co-develop and implement yearly.
November 2022 – Terms of reference for long-term relationship with the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation
The arrangement provides a forum for ongoing and respectful open dialogue, engagement and collaboration regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities of interest to Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (AOPFN), and includes an annual workplan which AOPFN and CNSC staff collaboratively develop and implement on a yearly basis.
June 2022 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with Ya’thi Néné Lands and Resources
The arrangement provides a structured forum for ongoing and respectful open dialogue, engagement and collaboration regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities of interest to the seven Athabasca Basin communities represented by Ya’thi Néné Lands and Resources.
March 2022 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation
The arrangement provides a forum of collaboration to address areas of interest regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities within the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation traditional and treaty territories.
February 2021 – Terms of reference for long-term Engagement with the Curve Lake First Nation
The arrangement provides a forum of collaboration to address areas of interest regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities within the Curve Lake First Nation’s traditional territory.
December 2019 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with the Métis Nation of Ontario
The arrangement provides a forum of collaboration to address areas of interest regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities within the Métis Nation of Ontario’s regions and traditional territories.
May 2019 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation
The arrangement provides a forum of collaboration to address areas of interest regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities within the Saugeen Ojibway Nation’s traditional territory.
May 2019 – Terms of reference for long-term engagement with the Historic Saugeen Métis
The arrangement provides a forum of collaboration to address areas of interest regarding CNSC-regulated facilities and activities within the Historic Saugeen Métis’ traditional territory.
