Memorandum of understanding between the CNSC and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment (SMOE) have responsibilities related to the regulation of uranium mining and milling facilities in the province of Saskatchewan. In recognition of these mutual responsibilities, the Atomic Energy Control Board (former name of the CNSC) and Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in 1996 to foster collaboration on the implementation, application and administration of regulations and requirements related to the decommissioning and reclamation, including the provision of financial assurances, of those facilities.
Recently, the CNSC and the SMOE agreed that an update to this 1996 MOU was warranted to ensure that it remains current and to renew the commitment to ongoing collaboration and cooperation. Staff from both organizations have made mutually agreeable administrative updates to the MOU. Read the MOU in English and in French.
