Regulatory Action - Bruce Power

Under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and associated regulations, various levels of regulatory action can be taken by the CNSC to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment.

Order issued to Bruce Power

The CNSC has issued an order to Bruce Power related to the operation of Bruce Nuclear Generating Stations A and B.

The order requires Bruce Power to obtain authorization from the Commission prior to the restart to Units 3, 4, 5, 7 or 8 following any outage that results in the cooldown of the heat transport system.

The order requires the licensee, prior to seeking restart authorization, to complete one of the following:

  • Carry out inspection and maintenance activities and submit results of such activities to CNSC staff that demonstrate with a high degree of confidence that pressure tube hydrogen levels [Heq] are within Bruce Power's licensing basis.

Or

  • Carry out inspection and maintenance activities and submit results of such activities to CNSC staff that demonstrate with a high degree of confidence that no flaws are present in the region of pressure tubes where the models failed to conservatively predict the elevated hydrogen levels [Heq].
