Webinar: Darlington New Nuclear Project – Regulatory review and public hearing update

Join us on October 31, 2023, for a webinar on the regulatory review and the public hearing for the Darlington New Nuclear Project.

The focus of this webinar will be to present an overview of the CNSC’s review of submissions from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and their conclusions, as well as to give information on the upcoming public hearing (PDF, 130 KB) scheduled for January 2024.

CNSC staff have completed a technical assessment of OPG’s environmental impact statement review report (PDF, 2 MB) and plant parameter envelope (PPE) (PDF, 6 MB) documents and supporting documentation, and have presented the conclusions and recommendations in CMD 24-H2 (PDF, 1 MB).

OPG is proposing to construct a small modular reactor of up to 300 megawatts electric as early as 2025 in the Municipality of Clarington, Ontario.

In December 2021, OPG announced its selection of GE Hitachi’s BWRX‑300 technology. Based on this choice, OPG submitted its updated EIS and PPE documents and supporting documentation for the CNSC’s review, in 2022.

OPG currently holds a site preparation licence and in October 2022 submitted an application for a licence to construct (external PDF, 8 MB, in English only).

The purpose of this webinar is to:

• familiarize the public with the Darlington New Nuclear Project and its activities
• discuss CNSC staff’s technical review of OPG’s EIS review and PPE review documents, providing an overview of conclusions and recommendations
• provide information on the upcoming public hearing in January 2024, including details on how to get involved
• answer questions about the project and the regulatory process
