Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) of its intent to apply for an amendment to an existing licence. The amendment seeks to obtain authorization for the construction and operation of an extension to the existing used fuel processing and storage facility at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station site in Pickering, Ontario. The existing Pickering Waste Management Facility Phase I (PWMF I) is licensed as a Class IB nuclear facility under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, and an environmental assessment was completed for the PWMF I in 1999.

Before the Commission makes its decision on OPG's application, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.
