The CNSC participates in the 61st General Conference of the IAEA
From September 18 to 22, 2017, the CNSC will participate as part of the Canadian delegation to the 61st General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.
The IAEA has 168 Member States from around the globe, including all major nuclear powers.
The General Conference is the IAEA’s highest policy-making body. It addresses important issues – including nuclear safety, security and safeguards – that pertain to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and substances by all Member States, as well as the IAEA's budget and mandate.
Ms. Kim Rudd, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, will once again lead the Canadian delegation, which will also include representatives from the CNSC, Natural Resources Canada, Global Affairs Canada and Atomic Energy Canada Limited.
During the General Conference, CNSC participants will attend bilateral meetings with representatives from a number of national nuclear regulators in order to share information and best practices, with a view to further enhancing nuclear safety and security in Canada and abroad. Key topics for these discussions include the regulation of small modular reactors, nuclear waste and medical isotopes, in addition to further enhancing regulatory cooperation.
CNSC senior management and staff will participate in several side events, including the 41st International Nuclear Regulators Association Meeting, the Senior Regulators’ Meeting, and a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Joint Convention.
