Abstract

Malaika Bacon-Dussault, Legal Counsel for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), presented a paper at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference held in Ottawa on April 8, 2013. The paper, titled Independence of Nuclear Regulators in the Aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident, highlights how the independence of nuclear regulatory bodies can be achieved in the wake of the 2011 Japanese nuclear accident. It also presents a comparative study examining how other nations have reacted to the prospect of nuclear regulatory independence following the accident.
