Abstract
This presentation provides a comprehensive review of the evolutionary approach to aging management (AM) and long-term operation (LTO) of CANDU nuclear power plants in Canada. This approach has evolved – from the first plant (Pickering A, 1971) to the newest (Darlington, 1990) – in line with international requirements and best practices, including the specificity of the CANDU technology and the domestic operating experience.
Within this approach, special attention is given to integrating the most recent lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident, which led to the implementation of significant post Fukushima enhancements to all five layers of defence in depth.
The presentation provides a summary of the most recent CNSC domestic and international research and activities on AM and LTO, including staff participation/hosting of workshops and conferences.
Lastly, the presentation emphasizes the importance of the regulator and industry working together to make Canadian nuclear power plants even safer.
