Development of a viscoelastoplastic model for a bedded argillaceous rock from laboratory triaxial tests

In many countries, including Canada, argillaceous rock formations are potential host rocks for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. The CNSC collaborates with CanmetMINING and the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) to perform experimental and theoretical research on such rock types. Laboratory triaxial tests on Tournemire shale, an argillaceous rock from France, were performed at the CanmetMINING laboratories (Ottawa, Canada). From the results of the triaxial tests, we developed and calibrated a viscoelastoplastic model to simulate the mechanical behaviour of the Tournemire shale. An understanding of the mechanical behaviour of argillaceous rocks is one of the key requirements for the assessment of their performance as a natural barrier against radionuclide migration.
