Abstract

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) held its Workshop on the Canadian Journey on Seismic Design and Qualification of Nuclear Installations in Ottawa on June 9 and 10, 2016. Invited speakers (from academia, the Government of Canada, the private sector and the nuclear industry) made presentations during the workshop on topics ranging from the evolution of seismic design to the science of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment.

Overall, 50 participants associated with 16 Canadian organizations attended the 1.5-day event. The workshop provided the opportunity for dissemination of scientific, technical and regulatory information about the past and present measures in place to ensure the seismic safety of Canadian nuclear power plants. It also provided a forum for all to share experiences, information on developments and new ideas. In addition, the workshop allowed experts to discuss state-of-the-art seismic design at Canadian nuclear power plants.

A total of nine presentations were made during three technical sessions. The themes of the technical sessions were:

• historical approaches to seismic design and qualification for Canadian nuclear installations
• seismic hazard assessments for Canadian nuclear installations
• recent developments in seismic safety further to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident
