Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of CANDU fuel design evolution from the perspective of current accident-tolerant fuel concepts and developmental criteria for light water reactors. The discussion emphasizes the need to consider the CANDU design features, as well as the CANDU-specific severe accident progression and conditions, in developing criteria for accident-tolerant CANDU fuel. The required R&Ds, including testing and demonstration activities, are also discussed. The paper concludes that the CANFLEX 43-element design concept, with or without minor design changes to the fuel element and/or the bundle, could be a suitable candidate for an accident-tolerant CANDU fuel.
