Abstract:
Structures, systems and components are classified relative to their safety importance to ensure that they are designed, constructed, installed and operated to appropriate standards commensurate with their safety importance. Classification requirements are established separately for different purposes in many Canadian Standards Association standards and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulations. This paper reviews the classification requirements and criteria for design, inspection, equipment qualification and quality assurance. There are several classification schemes, which include pressure boundary code, seismic, environmental, and safety-related classifications. A comparison is offered to show their similarities and differences. Potential classification harmonization is discussed.
