Abstract
The IAEA technical support organization (TSO) forum was established by a group of member countries with the purpose of encouraging open dialogue and sharing of scientific and technical information supporting nuclear safety and security regulation along with promoting coordination and collaboration among TSOs with the purpose of contributing to the harmonization of practices in these areas around the world. IAEA TECDOC-1835 was developed that provides key insights into areas such as the different models of a TSO within a given regulatory framework, common characteristics and values of the TSO, key areas of expertise and the scope of the activities to be undertaken by an effective, competent TSO. The TSO forum has more recently focused on the development of tools such as self-assessment questionnaires and supporting guidance to assist both mature and developing national regulatory authorities in focusing their attention on prioritization of technical and scientific capacity building.
This technical presentation will provide a high level overview of some of the more recent undertakings of the TSO forum including developing of the self-assessment questionnaire, development of case study templates, and other supporting tools. Finally the way forward will be discussed including the expected conduct of a first national workshop later in 2019 in which the tools will be utilized to assist the national authority in decision-making regarding developing a new or modernized TSO capability.
