Abstract
The Canadian Safeguards Support Program (CSSP) was one of the very first Member State Support Programs established with the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA). The CSSP supports Canada’s international commitments to the IAEA’s safeguards regime under the peaceful uses of nuclear energy pursuant to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. This support is carried out through a strategic selection of participation and resourcing in both internally-proposed safeguards projects and IAEA-proposed safeguards projects. For 45 years, the CSSP has helped to advance the evolution and improve the effectiveness of safeguards in Canada and abroad. Specific examples of safeguards achievements under the CSSP will be shared in the paper, as well as past challenges, current progress, and a future outlook of the program.
