Participant Funding Program decision – Cameco Corporation’s request to revoke current licence and to release the Beaverlodge Project to the Institutional Control Program
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced on April 8, 2024, that they are offering up to $100,000 under the Participant Funding Program (PFP). This funding was to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public, and interested parties in reviewing Cameco’s licence revocation application, and in participating in the Commission hearing process by providing written and oral interventions to the Commission.
The Beaverlodge Project is located near Uranium City in northern Saskatchewan and is situated within historic Treaty 8 (1899) territory, the Homeland of the Métis, and is within the traditional territories of the Dene, Cree, and Métis peoples.
Background
The CNSC made participant funding available to:
- for the provision of new, distinctive, and valuable information to the CNSC through informed and topic-specific interventions
- to assist interested parties to reviewing Cameco’s licence revocation application, and in participating in the Commission hearing process
A funding review committee (FRC) was established to review the funding applications received by the CNSC’s PFP administrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding to the applicant.
On July 17, 2024, the FRC reviewed the 4 PFP applications received by the CNSC, requesting a total of $293,773.95.
