Participant funding for the Regulatory Oversight Report for Uranium Mines, Mills, Historic and Decommissioned Sites in Canada: 2023
This participant funding opportunity is open from June 24 to July 26, 2024.
Participant funding notice
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is offering participant funding to assist Indigenous Nations and communities, members of the public and interested parties in reviewing CNSC staff’s Regulatory Oversight Report for Uranium Mines, Mills, Historic and Decommissioned Sites in Canada: 2023, and in submitting comments in writing to the Commission. In addition, in the spirit of reconciliation and in recognition of the Indigenous oral tradition of sharing knowledge, the CNSC is offering Indigenous intervenors the opportunity to make oral presentations. The uranium mines and mills covered by the report are located in the traditional and treaty territories of many Indigenous Nations and communities.
On January 30, 2025, the CNSC will hold a public meeting at which CNSC staff will present the regulatory oversight report to the Commission. The report will provide an overview of CNSC regulatory efforts during the 2023 calendar year with respect to licensed operating uranium mines and mills in Canada and the activities that occurred between 2021 and 2023 at the decommissioned and historic sites in Canada. The report will address:
- CNSC staff’s licensing and compliance work at these sites, as it relates to environmental protection, radiation protection, and conventional health and safety
- changes to licences and licence condition handbooks during the reporting period
- licensee performance at these sites, with additional information on any areas where performance is assessed as being less than satisfactory
- other notable events during the period and CNSC staff’s responses
- relevant Independent Environmental Monitoring Program results for these sites
- Indigenous engagement and consultation carried out by CNSC staff
Up to $75,000 in participant funding will be disbursed among all eligible applicants for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. Participant funding applications must clearly demonstrate how the proposed intervention will provide the Commission with information on topics directly related to the report, the regulatory performance of operating uranium mines and mills in Canada during the 2023 calendar year, or the activities that occurred between 2021 and 2023 at the decommissioned and historic sites. Such topics could include engagement activities with CNSC staff and licensees.
