Participant Funding for the Regulatory Oversight Report for Canadian Nuclear Power Generating Sites: 2019 and the Refurbishment Update for Ontario Power Generation's Darlington Nuclear Generating Station
This participant funding offering is open from July 8 to August 7, 2020.
Participant funding notice
The CNSC is offering participant funding to assist Indigenous peoples, members of the public, and stakeholders in reviewing two topics and submitting comments on them in writing to the Commission. One topic is CNSC staff’s Regulatory Oversight Report for Canadian Nuclear Power Generating Sites: 2019 (the report). The other is an update on Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) refurbishment project at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (NGS).
Indigenous intervenors may also make oral presentations. This additional opportunity is being made available to Indigenous intervenors in the spirit of reconciliation and in recognition of the Indigenous oral tradition of sharing knowledge. Oral presentations will be made remotely due to potential travel restrictions or limitations relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On December 8, 9 and 10, 2020, the CNSC will hold a public meeting where CNSC staff will present the regulatory oversight report to the Commission and speak on the report. The report itself will provide CNSC staff’s assessment of the Canadian nuclear power industry’s safety performance for both nuclear power plants and onsite waste management facilities during the 2019 calendar year, with limited updates regarding certain developments in 2020. Following presentation of the report, CNSC staff and OPG will provide an update on OPG’s refurbishment project at the Darlington NGS that focuses on Unit 2. CNSC staff’s presentation will focus on their own assessment of the safety of the work carried out by OPG and the CNSC’s oversight of the work.
Up to $35,000 in participant funding will be disbursed among all eligible applicants for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. PFP applications must clearly demonstrate how the proposed submission will provide the Commission with information directly relating to the 2019 regulatory oversight report, licensee safety performance at CNSC-licensed nuclear power generating sites during 2019 and/or the Darlington NGS refurbishment. Funding for travel to the Commission meeting is not within the scope of this funding opportunity.
