Participant funding for AREVA Resources Canada Inc.'s McClean Lake mine and mill operating licence renewal

Participant funding for AREVA Resources Canada Inc.’s (AREVA) McClean Lake uranium mine and mill operating licence renewal will be open from October 14 to December 12, 2016.

Participant funding notice

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is offering participant funding to assist members of the public, Aboriginal groups and other stakeholders in participating in the licence application review and Commission hearing process for AREVA’s McClean Lake mine and mill operating licence renewal.

The CNSC will hold a public hearing in La Ronge, Saskatchewan on June 7 or 8, 2017 to consider an application from AREVA to renew its uranium mine and mill operating licence for 12 years, until June 2029. The current operating licence expires on June 30, 2017.

The McClean Lake Operation is located in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 750 km north of Saskatoon, SK. The renewal of the operating licence would also allow AREVA to continue processing uranium ore slurry from Cameco Corporation’s Cigar Lake Operation, also located in northern Saskatchewan.

Participant funding up to $75,000 is being offered for the provision of new, distinctive and valuable information, through informed and topic-specific interventions to the Commission. Funding will be awarded for the review of documentation including CNSC staff and AREVA’s Commission member documents, and for participation in the public Commission hearing.

To apply for participant funding, interested parties must complete and return the participant funding application form. Certain terms and conditions apply. Submit the application form by

  • email: pfp@cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca
  • mail: Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

The deadline to submit a participant funding application is December 12, 2016. Please note that late or incomplete funding applications will not be considered.

A funding review committee, independent of the CNSC, will consider all applications for funding and make recommendations on the allocation of funds.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
