CNSC Participant Funding Program Decision - Algonquins of Ontario Indigenous Knowledge and Land Use and Occupancy Study in Relation to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' Near Surface Disposal Facility and Nuclear Power Demonstration Closure Projects
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has offered funding under its Participant Funding Program (PFP) for general matters of regulatory interest to the Algonquins of Ontario (AOO) to conduct an Indigenous knowledge and land use and occupancy study (IKLUOS) in relation to the Near Surface Disposal Facility and Nuclear Power Demonstration Closure projects.
The information gathered from the IKLUOS will be considered as part of the environmental assessment review process and included in the relevant Commission member document in order to bring value-added information directly to the Commission.
Background
Participant funding for general matters of regulatory interest was made available by the CNSC to:
- enhance Indigenous and stakeholder participation in the CNSC’s environmental assessment and licensing processes
- help stakeholders bring valuable information to the Commission
A funding review committee (FRC), independent from the CNSC, was established to review the funding application received by the CNSC’s PFP administrator and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding to the applicant.
The FRC members were:
- Paul Scott, retired regional director of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency’s Vancouver office
- Bruce Young, retired director of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency
- Steve Burgess, retired director of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency
The CNSC received one PFP application requesting $245,290.20 and this was reviewed by the FRC.
Eligibility and funding criteria
