CNSC Participant Funding Program Decision - Métis Nation of Ontario Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Study in Relation to the Near Surface Disposal Facility and Nuclear Power Demonstration Closure Projects

CNSC Participant Funding Program Decision (PDF 165 KB)

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has offered funding under its Participant Funding Program (PFP) for general matters of regulatory interest to the Métis Nation of Ontario to conduct a traditional knowledge and land use study (TKLUS) in relation to the Near Surface Disposal Facility and Nuclear Power Demonstration Closure Projects.

The information gathered from the TKLUS will be considered as part of the environmental assessment review processes and included in the relevant Commission member documents in order to bring value-added information directly to the Commission.

Background

Participant funding for general matters of regulatory interest was made available by the CNSC to:

  • enhance Indigenous and stakeholder participation in the CNSC's environmental assessment and licensing processes
  • help stakeholders bring valuable information to the Commission

A Funding Review Committee (FRC), independent from the CNSC, was established to review the funding application received by the CNSC's PFP administrator, and to make recommendations on the allocation of funding to the applicant.

The FRC members were:

  • Paul Scott, retired regional director of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency's Vancouver office
  • Bruce Young, retired director of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency

The CNSC received one PFP application requesting $182,677.04 and this was reviewed by the FRC.

Eligibility and funding criteria

For more information on participant funding and how it works, including details on eligibility and funding criteria, please read the PFP guide.
