Exposure device operators

To perform gamma radiography or operate an exposure device in Canada, the law requires you to be certified by the CNSC as an exposure device operator (EDO) or to be working under the direct supervision of a certified EDO. The CSA Group's document CSA PCP-09, Exposure Device Operator Personnel Certification Guide – Revision 1 , is the official guide for CNSC EDO certification and renewal of certification.

As of January 1, 2017, the CNSC will consider a worker qualified to operate an exposure device only if they have a valid EDO certification card (that is, a card issued on or after February 1, 2013 that has not expired). As a result, any EDO whose certification card does not have an expiry date or whose certification card has expired will not be considered qualified to work as a certified EDO.

Exclusions to EDO Certification

Becoming certified as an EDO does not grant the certified EDO permission to perform all regulated activities related to exposure devices or industrial radiography. The following activities require that additional training or certification be obtained through external certifying bodies:

  • maintaining and repairing industrial radiography exposure devices
  • transporting Class 7 dangerous goods
  • working as certified non-destructive testing personnel (RT Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3) CAN/CGSB 48.9712 as administered by Natural Resources Canada
  • responding to industrial radiography emergency situations (e.g. source retrieval)
