In his presentation, Dr. Binder provided an overview of the CNSC's roles and responsibilities as regulator, and its work in the areas of emergency preparedness, small modular reactors, Indigenous engagement and public outreach.

On February 22, 2017, President Michael Binder gave a presentation to members of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities at their annual general meeting in Ottawa, ON. The presentation provided an overview of the CNSC's regulatory responsibilities, updates on nuclear power plants, Canadian uranium projects and waste management, as well as a discussion of emergency preparedness and the CNSC's public outreach.

His presentation, titled “Safety and Security of Supply of Medical Isotope Production – the Canadian Regulator's Perspective”, provides an overview of the responsibility for and the production and supply of isotopes in Canada, regulatory considerations including the regulation of new technologies, and considerations for safety and security.

On July 18, 2017, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, shared his experiences as President of the 7th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) with the Officers of the 6th Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. He spoke specifically about work done to increase participation at the 7th Review Meeting of the CNS and his efforts to increase openness and transparency of the review process. He also discussed the introduction of the concept of "Areas of Good Performance", which was used for the first time at the 7th Review Meeting.

On June 5, 2017, Jason Cameron, CNSC Vice-President and Chief Communications Officer, delivered a presentation on behalf of Ramzi Jammal at the 37th Annual Conference of the Canadian Nuclear Society in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The presentation, titled "The Canadian Approach to Effective Safety and Security Interfacing", discusses the importance placed on safety and security interfaces in Canada while recognizing the societal benefits arising from the safe and secure use of sealed sources. Mr. Cameron also highlights Canadian good practices that were identified by the International Atomic Energy Agency during a recent International Physical Protection Advisory Service mission.

The presentation, titled “Convention on Nuclear Safety: Outcomes of the Seventh Review Meeting”, discusses the major outcomes and successes of the recent review meeting including key achievements and improvements from past review meetings such as increased participation and transparency. Mr. Jammal also noted further work to be done leading up to the next review meeting in 2020.

On January 9, 2017, Terry Jamieson, CNSC Vice-President, Technical Support Branch, delivered a presentation titled “Issues and Challenges in Radiation Protection in Canada: A Status Update” at the 2017 International Information System on Occupational Exposure ALARA Symposium in Ft. Lauderdale, U.S. In his presentation, Mr. Jamieson outlined the current state of Canadian nuclear power reactors, provided a summary of the Canadian regulatory process for refurbishment and life extension together with some examples of regulatory lessons-learned from past refurbishments, and commented on Canadian involvement and support of the ISOE Network.

From December 12 to 14, 2017, John Thelen, Program Supervisor for Major Decommissioning Projects, and Andrew McAllister, Director of the Environmental Risk Assessment Division, participated in a technical information exchange meeting on international best practices for in situ decommissioning of nuclear reactors. The meeting, held in Augusta, Georgia, USA, brought together 50 attendees representing agencies, regulators and others from around the world. Mr. Thelen and Mr. McAllister gave a high-level presentation on the CNSC's regulatory approach for major decommissioning projects in Canada.

On October 4, 2017, Adam Levine, Senior Aboriginal Consultation Advisor, and Candida Cianci, Environmental Assessment Specialist, gave a presentation to the Nuclear Energy Agency Working Party on Decommissioning and Dismantling at its meeting in Ottawa, Ontario. The presentation focused on the CNSC's mandate and approach for engagement in general, and on Canada's Indigenous people in particular. It also provided a case study of Indigenous and public engagement for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' proposed in situ decommissioning of the Whiteshell Reactor 1, a former nuclear research reactor that operated until 1985.

The presentation focused on the regulatory applications of accelerator mass spectrometry. The presentation also provided an overview of how accelerator mass spectrometers may be used to characterize radioactive waste and radioactive waste sites, as well as the isotopes of interest in this regard.
