NOV 21 - Mining Association of Canada’s Board of Directors panel discussion
On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, participated in a panel discussion at the Mining Association of Canada’s Board of Directors.
Ms. Velshi discussed the CNSC’s regulatory role and the December 12, 2018 Commission meeting, where CNSC staff will present the annual Regulatory Oversight Report on Uranium Mines, Mills, Historic and Decommissioned Sites. The report will outline the performance of Canada’s uranium mining licensees.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, delivered a presentation titled "Canada’s Nuclear Regulator– Update" at Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Generation Oversight Committee in Toronto, Ontario.
Ms. Velshi provided an overview of the CNSC, gave an update on the status of nuclear regulatory activities and outlined her priorities as CNSC President.

On Thursday, September 27, 2018, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO addressed the Women in Nuclear Canada Conference in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Ms. Velshi shared some insights about how to overcome barriers that exist for women in male-dominated science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

AUG 28 - Presentation by President Rumina Velshi at the U.S. Nuclear Industry Council USA-Canada Nuclear Energy Leadership Summit
On Tuesday, August 28, 2018, Rumina Velshi, CNSC President and CEO, delivered a presentation titled "Ready for the Future" at the U.S. Nuclear Industry Council USA-Canada Nuclear Energy Leadership Summit in Toronto, Ontario.
Ms. Velshi provided an overview of the CNSC and its regulatory readiness strategy for licensing small modular reactors. She also outlined her priorities and goals as the new CNSC President.

On July 18, 2018, Rumina Velshi, incoming President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) gave a keynote address at the 15th FORATOM-IAEA International Conference on Quality, Leadership and Management in the Nuclear Industry.
Ms. Velshi shared some experiences as a woman in the Canadian nuclear energy industry and provided her vision about how the CNSC can evolve to meet major changes occurring in the nuclear sector.

On July 17, 2018, Michael Binder, President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) gave a keynote address at the 15th FORATOM-IAEA International Conference on Quality, Leadership and Management in the Nuclear Industry. In his remarks, President Binder reflected on some of his accomplishments during his past 10 years of leadership at the CNSC. He also shared some thoughts about important opportunities and challenges facing the nuclear sector and nuclear regulators.

APR 25 - Remarks by President Michael Binder to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development
On April 25, 2018, Michael Binder, President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development to provide comments on the proposed Bill C-69 – An Act to enact the Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act, to amend the Navigation Protection Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. In his remarks, President Binder affirmed the CNSC's support for Bill C-69 and, with regard to the Impact Assessment Act in particular, identified a number of areas that could benefit from increased clarity. He also outlined the CNSC's unique regulatory expertise and extensive experience with environmental assessment, and stated that Canada's nuclear regulator looks forward to collaborating with the new Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, as well as participating at every step of the assessment and in all licensing phases of nuclear projects.

On Wednesday, February 21, 2018, Michael Binder, President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), gave a presentation at the annual general meeting of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities in Ottawa, Ontario. In his presentation, Dr. Binder provided an update on regulatory activities in mining, nuclear power plants, nuclear waste management, emergency preparedness and modernizing Canada's nuclear regulatory framework. He also discussed the Government of Canada's ongoing government reviews and reconciliation activities with Indigenous Canadians, as well as public outreach commitments.

NOV 23 - Presentation by Lisa Thiele to the Working Party on Legal Aspects of Nuclear Safety
On November 23, 2018, Lisa Thiele, CNSC Senior General Counsel, gave a presentation to the Working Party on Legal Aspects of Nuclear Safety in Paris, France. The presentation was titled "Update on Small Modular Reactors: A Canadian Regulatory Perspective".
Ms. Thiele’s presentation gave an overview of the CNSC’s regulatory approach to small modular reactors (SMRs), as well as the CNSC’s regulatory readiness and pre-licensing vendor design review process. In her presentation, Ms. Thiele also discussed how the CNSC and Government of Canada are cooperating and sharing information on SMR technologies with a number of countries.

On Thursday, November 15, 2018, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, presented at the 44th meeting of the Commission in Nuclear Standards in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Jammal delivered a presentation on the use of IAEA safety standards in Canada.

On Wednesday, November 7, 2018, Peter Elder, Vice-President of the Technical Support Branch and Chief Science Officer, gave a presentation in Ottawa, Ontario, at the Canadian Nuclear Society’s 1st International Conference on Generation IV and Small Reactors. In his presentation, titled "CNSC Review of Vendor Designs for Generation IV and Small Modular Reactors", he discussed the CNSC’s mandate as Canada’s nuclear regulator, the regulatory framework in place for new small modular reactors (SMRs), and the CNSC’s pre-licensing vendor design review process.

OCT 29 - Presentation by Peter Elder to the Radiation Protection Computer Code Analysis and Maintenance Program (RAMP)
On October 29, 2018, Peter Elder, Vice-President of the CNSC’s Technical Support Branch and Chief Science Officer, opened the 2018 Fall Users’ Meeting of the International Radiation Protection Computer Code Analysis and Maintenance Program (RAMP). The CNSC is co-hosting the meeting in collaboration with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In his presentation, Mr. Elder spoke about the value of RAMP computer code training for CNSC staff in the areas of emergency operations, assessment of radiation doses following a nuclear emergency and calculation of dose to the skin following exposure to radiation.

OCT 23 - Presentation by Peter Elder to the Federal Provincial Territorial Radiation Protection Committee
On October 23, 2018, Peter Elder, Vice-President of the CNSC’s Technical Support Branch and Chief Science Officer, gave an update to the Federal Provincial Territorial Radiation Protection Committee titled “Update on Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Activities”. In his presentation, Mr. Elder provided a current picture of Canada’s nuclear generating stations, the closure and decommissioning of facilities, and proposed waste management projects. He also briefed the Committee on small modular reactors, emergency preparedness activities, and current international collaborations on a variety of nuclear regulatory initiatives.

OCT 3 - Presentation by Lisa Thiele at the Nuclear Law Institute Law
On October 3, 2018, Lisa Thiele, CNSC Senior General Counsel, gave a presentation at the Nuclear Law Institute in Baden, Austria. The presentation was titled "Regulating Uranium Mining and Production: Part of a National Nuclear Regulatory Statute".
Ms. Thiele's presentation gave an overview of past and current uranium mine regulation in Canada, environmental impact assessments, the regulatory framework for uranium mining, and Indigenous and other rights that can be involved.

OCT 1 - Opening remarks by Jason Cameron at the International Atomic Energy Agency – Communicating Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies to the Public
On Monday, October 1, 2018, Jason Cameron, CNSC Vice-President and Chief Communications Officer, gave the opening remarks at the IAEA International Symposium on CNREP.
As CNREP symposium president, Mr. Cameron spoke about the importance of effective public communication during a nuclear or radiological emergency.

On August 28, 2018, Lisa Thiele, CNSC Senior General Counsel, gave a presentation at the International School of Nuclear Law in Montpellier, France. The presentation was titled "Regulating Uranium Production: Mining, Transportation, Trade and Control".
Ms. Thiele gave an overview of past and current uranium mining regulations; regulatory issues dealing with the environment, worker protection, waste, transport and non-proliferation, Indigenous rights, and responsible business conduct.

On July 15, 2018, Jason Cameron, Vice-President and Chief Communications Officer, Regulatory Affairs Branch, presented an update on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's regulatory activities at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners Summer Policy Summit, in Scottsdale, Arizona. In his presentation, Mr. Cameron spoke of current regulatory activities for Canada's mines and mills, nuclear power plants and nuclear laboratories, as well as on waste management. He also discussed the CNSC's work on regulatory modernization, new legislation, engagement with Indigenous peoples, and cross-border emergency management coordination.

MAY 22 - Canada presents at the Sixth Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management
On May 22, 2018, the Canadian delegation, led by Ramzi Jammal, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, presented at the Sixth Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. The presentation demonstrated that Canada continues to meet its obligations under the terms of the Joint Convention and continues to maintain a consistently high level of safety in the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste, and to protect the health and safety of the public and the environment.

The CNSC was invited to present to Quebec municipal officials attending the annual Union of Quebec Municipalities meeting in Gatineau, Quebec, from May 16 to 18, 2018. The presentation included an overview of the role of the CNSC as Canada's nuclear regulator, its regulatory framework and licensing process. It also provided an overview of the environmental assessment processes under way for two proposed Canadian Nuclear Laboratories projects: the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) in Deep River, Ontario, and the Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD) Closure Project in Rolphton, Ontario.

On Wednesday, May 16, 2018, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, delivered a presentation jointly with the Honourable Kristine Svinicki, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, titled "Nuclear Emergency Management in Canada and the United States" at the 42nd International Nuclear Regulators Association Meeting in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea. In their presentation, they described the responsibilities of licensees, various levels of government and the regulatory roles in their respective countries, during a nuclear emergency. They also provided information on how Canada and the United States collaborate on planning, share information and participate in each other's emergency exercises.

On April 11, 2018, Peter Elder, Vice President of the Technical Support Branch (TSB) and Chief Science Officer at the CNSC, gave a presentation at the Workshop on Building Effective Technical and Scientific Capabilities in Embarking Countries (IAEA TSO Forum), Vienna, Austria. Mr. Elder discussed how the CNSC's Technical Support Branch functions as its technical and scientific support organization (TSO) model and how it is integrated into all of the CNSC's regulatory activities to ensure accessibility to technical resources, excellent support, familiarity with issues, and ongoing training.

On February 15, 2018, Peter Elder, Vice-President and Chief Science Officer, Technical Support Branch, gave a presentation at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) Federal Lab Day held in Ottawa, Ontario, titled Opportunities for CNL in Support of Nuclear Safety and Regulation. Mr. Elder discussed the value of regulatory research, the CNSC's collaboration with CNL on research programs, and areas of growth including small modular reactors.

On November 7, 2018, Dr. David Newland, Director General of the CNSC’s Directorate of Assessment and Analysis, gave a presentation titled "The Changing Landscape of Research – A Regulator’s Perspective" at the Canadian Nuclear Society’s 1st International Conference on Generation IV and Small Reactors (G4SR 1) in Ottawa, Ontario. In the context of a discussion about small modular reactors, Dr. Newland highlighted the importance of research in the development of new technologies and the need for a shared vision for the types of and roles for research in this field.

MAY 18 - Presentation by Liane Sauer at the 2nd Nuclear Regulatory Information Conference
On Friday, May 18, 2018, Liane Sauer, Director General of the CNSC's Strategic Planning Directorate, gave a presentation titled "Stakeholder Engagement: The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's Approach and Experience", at the 2nd Nuclear Regulatory Information Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa. In her presentation, Ms. Sauer provided information on why public engagement is important to nuclear regulators, and who the CNSC engages with and when. She also described the many forms of engagement – in person, via digital channels, and through consultations.

MAR 28 - Presentation by Doug Miller at the International SMR and Advanced Reactor Summit
Doug Miller, Lead Technical Advisor, Directorate of Major Project Management and Regulatory Improvement, delivered a presentation to the International SMR and Advanced Reactor Summit 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. The presentation, titled "Canadian Perspective on Risk-Informed Regulation of Small Modular Reactors", discussed the CNSC's view on risk-informed regulation of such reactors. The presentation addressed the flexibility afforded by the CNSC's risk-informed, performance-based regulatory approach, overarching safety objectives and defence in depth.

MAR 19 - Presentation by Haidy Tadros at the 2018 Waste Management Symposia International Conference
On March 19, 2018, Haidy Tadros, Director General, Directorate of Nuclear Cycle and Facilities Regulation, gave a presentation as part of a panel discussion at the 2018 Waste Management Symposia International Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The presentation focused on the CNSC's regulatory oversight of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' (CNL) major decommissioning projects under the Canadian Government-owned Contractor-operated (GoCo) model. It outlined the CNSC's regulatory framework and licensee's responsibility for waste and decommissioning, and provided an update on the Government of Canada's review of environmental assessment legislation and relations with Indigenous communities.

MAR 5 - Presentation by Stephanie Herstead to the UK "nucleargraduates" visiting the CNSC
On March 5, 2018, Stephanie Herstead, Project Officer, New Major Facilities Licensing Division, gave a presentation to students enrolled in the UK "nucleargraduates" training program, who were visiting the CNSC in Ottawa, Ontario. The talk was titled "The CNSC's Regulatory Approach to Small Modular Reactors and Other Advanced Technologies". Ms. Herstead discussed the basics of small modular reactors (SMRs), the current climate in Canada for SMR and related technologies, updates on vendor design reviews, and key regulatory issues associated with these activities.
